Every register on this page is published by somebody with the authority to publish it — the State of Tennessee, the manufacturers, and the office that will inspect your job. We name no companies and rank none. They do the naming; this page tells you where they keep the list and what a listing is actually worth.
In short
- Tennessee splits electrical licensing in two. The state board issues the contractor licence, required at the state threshold and searchable statewide. Journeyman and master electrician licences are issued locally by cities and counties — so the licence your job actually needs may be one the state register never sees.
- A manufacturer dealer listing and a licence are unrelated documents. A company can appear in a dealer locator and still not hold the licence your jurisdiction requires; it can hold every licence and appear in no locator at all.
- Neither register covers insurance.No search on this page will tell you whether a company carries liability cover or workers’ compensation. That comes from the carrier, as a certificate, naming your address.
- The single most useful thing you can ask for is a licence number. It converts a claim into something you can check in a minute — which is the whole reason a number is harder to get than a reassurance.

What to confirm for your own home
- The exact licence number and the legal entity name it belongs to — then search that name yourself.
- Which office issues and inspects the electrical permit at your address, and which licence that office accepts.
- The dealer listing, on the manufacturer’s own locator, on the day you check it.
- A certificate of insurance sent direct from the insurer, not a photograph of one.

This page verifies nobody. Why “licensed” means two different things here
A standby generator is electrical work, and electrical work in Tennessee is licensed at two levels at once. The state board licenses contractors and publishes classifications and monetary limits; the Limited Licensed Electrician classification covers electrical work below the state threshold in jurisdictions that rely on the state Division of Fire Prevention for permits and inspections. Journeyman and master electrician licences, meanwhile, are a local matter — issued by the city or county, and not held in the state register at all.
The practical consequence is the thing to carry away: the register that settles it depends on your address. A company that searches clean at the state level may still need a local licence for your job, and the office that will inspect the work is the office that can say which. Register one: the State of Tennessee
The state publishes its own licence data and its own instructions for searching it. Go to the source rather than to a third-party lookup site: the commercial licence-check sites that rank for this question are copies of state data of unknown age, and a stale copy is worse than no copy when the question is whether a licence is current.

Register two: the manufacturers
Every major standby brand runs a dealer locator, and it is the only authority on who is in its own network. If a company tells you it is an authorised dealer, this is where that claim is settled — by the manufacturer, not by us and not by the company making the claim. Check the brand you are actually being quoted, and check it on the day.

Dealer networks change without notice, so a listing is only good for the moment you read it. Generac’s current dealer tiers are Prestige, Elite Plus, Elite, Premier and Select; “PowerPro” tier names still repeated widely online are legacy, and no tier is asserted here for anybody.
What a listing is not
A dealer locator is a manufacturer’s statement about its own commercial network. It is not a licence, not proof of insurance, not a guarantee of price or availability, and not a judgement about workmanship. A licence, equally, records a classification and a standing on a register — it says nothing about whether the work will be good, whether the company is insured, or whether they will turn up. The four questions, and why each one

Why there is no list of companies here
