Is a Whole-House Generator Worth It in Knoxville?
Two of the three numbers in this decision are public, and we will give you both. The third one is yours, and no website has it — which is why every page that answers this question with a single figure had to invent something to get there.

- The exposure is knowable. August 2023 took power from roughly 74,000 KUB customers for about 78 hours. KUB attributes at least half of all its outages to vegetation, so this is a recurring condition of living here rather than a once-a-decade event.
- The third number is not ours to supply.What 78 hours without power costs your household — spoiled inventory, lost work, a relocated family, a medical device that has to keep running — is the term that decides this, and it is the term every “generators pay for themselves” article quietly assumes.
- There is a cheaper correct answer. A managed-load install with a load-shedding module protects the whole panel with a smaller machine. Rule that in or out before you price a whole-home unit.
What to confirm for your own home
- What your household actually loses in a 78-hour outage, in dollars, before you compare it to anything.
- Whether your address is inside Knoxville city limits — it changes who issues the permit and what it costs.
- Whether natural gas is already at your meter, or whether the quote includes a propane tank.
- Whether the quote is for a whole-home switch or a managed-load switch. They are different products at different prices.

Why there is no Knoxville price in that table
We looked. No Knoxville-area dealer publishes a verifiable installed or turnkey price for a specific unit. The one figure that surfaced belongs to a national chain template repeated across franchise sites, which makes it a marketing range rather than a local market price — so it is not in the table. What You Are Buying Against
The other side of the ledger is not a national statistic. It is the outage record of this specific grid.
- August 2023 — EF-2 tornado, 130 mph, 3.8-mile path through West Knox County
- Roughly 74,000 KUB customers lost power over the event; about 78 hours to restore. Among KUB’s largest outages on record.

The Third Number, and Why We Will Not Guess It
A payback calculation needs three terms: what the machine costs, how often you lose power, and what losing power costs you. The first two are above. The third one varies by more than an order of magnitude between two houses on the same street, and it is the term that decides the answer.
For a household where an outage means a cold weekend and a card game, 78 hours costs perhaps a freezer of food. For a household running a home business, a well pump, a medical device, or a parent who cannot safely be moved, the same 78 hours costs something else entirely — and that household usually already knows it does. That is why the honest version of this page ends with a question rather than a number:
What did the last multi-day outage actually cost your household — in spoiled food, lost income, a hotel, a generator rental, a relocated family member, or work that simply did not happen?
Put a figure on it. Compare it to $8,000–$16,000 and to how many times you expect the next decade to do that again. That is the entire calculation, and you are better placed to run it than we are.
Where the answer is usually no
If you rent, if you are moving inside two years, if your outages have been measured in hours rather than days, or if the loads that actually matter to you would run off a portable unit and someone is reliably home to start it — the standby install is usually the wrong purchase. We would rather say that here than at the end of a quote.
What Goes Wrong in This Decision
Pricing the generator and calling that the cost.

Treating “whole-house” as the only option worth buying.
InsteadA load-shedding module drops the big intermittent loads — air conditioning, EV charger, dryer, range — so a smaller generator can still protect the whole panel. That is a materially cheaper machine doing an acceptable job. See the transfer switch and load management guide before you size up. Once the answer is yes, the timing question decides whether it is finished before the season you are worried about.
Budgeting for the purchase and not for the decade after it.
InsteadGenerac documents oil and filter service every 2 years or 200 hours, air filter and plugs every 4 years or 400 hours, and oil service specifically “to maintain product warranty”. Below 40°F or sustained above 85°F that tightens to yearly. A standby generator you stop servicing is a standby generator that does not start.
Assuming the generator adds its own price back at resale.
InsteadWe are not going to tell you it does. No source we can verify establishes a resale figure for a standby generator in this market, and a number we cannot trace is a number we will not print. Treat resale as unknown and decide on the outage record instead.
If the Answer Is Yes
The order that saves the most money is: size it, then decide the switch, then check who is allowed to install it, then collect quotes you can actually compare.
- Size the generator against the loads you are actually protecting. In the Knoxville area a 22kW unit is the common whole-home recommendation for a roughly 2,500 sq ft gas-heated home with a four-ton air conditioner — but that is a starting point, not a spec.
- Decide whole-home versus managed load. This is the single largest lever on price that does not involve buying a worse machine.
- Settle fuel. Most of Knox County has KUB gas at the meter, so the question often answers itself — but Farragut, Maryville and Oak Ridge are each served differently, so confirm your own address rather than the metro's average.
- Check the installer's licence and dealer status in the state register and the manufacturer's own locator. We do not name companies; the authorities do.
- Compare the proposals line by line. Two quotes for “a 22kW generator” can differ by thousands and be describing different jobs.
