The Third Number, and Why We Will Not Guess It

A payback calculation needs three terms: what the machine costs, how often you lose power, and what losing power costs you. The first two are above. The third one varies by more than an order of magnitude between two houses on the same street, and it is the term that decides the answer.

For a household where an outage means a cold weekend and a card game, 78 hours costs perhaps a freezer of food. For a household running a home business, a well pump, a medical device, or a parent who cannot safely be moved, the same 78 hours costs something else entirely — and that household usually already knows it does. That is why the honest version of this page ends with a question rather than a number:

What did the last multi-day outage actually cost your household — in spoiled food, lost income, a hotel, a generator rental, a relocated family member, or work that simply did not happen?

Put a figure on it. Compare it to $8,000–$16,000 and to how many times you expect the next decade to do that again. That is the entire calculation, and you are better placed to run it than we are.

What Goes Wrong in This Decision

  1. Pricing the generator and calling that the cost.

  2. Treating “whole-house” as the only option worth buying.

  3. Budgeting for the purchase and not for the decade after it.

  4. Assuming the generator adds its own price back at resale.

If the Answer Is Yes

The order that saves the most money is: size it, then decide the switch, then check who is allowed to install it, then collect quotes you can actually compare.

  1. Size the generator against the loads you are actually protecting. In the Knoxville area a 22kW unit is the common whole-home recommendation for a roughly 2,500 sq ft gas-heated home with a four-ton air conditioner — but that is a starting point, not a spec.
  2. Decide whole-home versus managed load. This is the single largest lever on price that does not involve buying a worse machine.
  3. Settle fuel. Most of Knox County has KUB gas at the meter, so the question often answers itself — but Farragut, Maryville and Oak Ridge are each served differently, so confirm your own address rather than the metro's average.
  4. Check the installer's licence and dealer status in the state register and the manufacturer's own locator. We do not name companies; the authorities do.
  5. Compare the proposals line by line. Two quotes for “a 22kW generator” can differ by thousands and be describing different jobs.
