The process, start to finish

An installer calculates what must run at once — HVAC, well/sump pumps, kitchen, medical equipment — to size the generator and decide whole-home vs. managed-load.

Natural gas (a meter/line the utility must be able to supply) or propane (an on-site tank you size and site). This shapes both cost and placement.

A realistic timeline — and what delays it
With straightforward site conditions and adequate existing gas service, many installs run a few weeks from signed proposal to commissioning. What stretches it: utility gas meter/service work, a required panel upgrade, permit and inspection scheduling, HOA approval, equipment lead times, and difficult access or long fuel/electrical runs. If the gas meter has to be upsized, that step alone can dominate the schedule — ask your installer and gas utility for their current turnaround rather than assuming.
Get these in the written estimate
A specific generator model and kW; the transfer switch type; the fuel-line or propane-tank scope; the pad; every permit and who pulls it; the inspection; what's excluded; and the warranty and maintenance terms. Red flags
- An installer who offers to skip the permit or says a generator “doesn’t need one.”
- A verbal-only quote, or a price with no itemization of transfer switch, fuel line, pad, and permits.
- No mention of who pulls the electrical permit, or of inspection before the system is energized.
- A generator sized off square footage alone, with no load calculation.
- A “backfeed” or generator-inlet-cord workaround instead of a proper transfer switch.
